We all know there's more to Michelin star restaurants in France. There's wine, champagne, cured meat, and a culinary scene worth exploring.

General tips

🗣️ Learning a little bit of french can go a long way to get a friendly welcome from the Frenchies!
🗓️ This is a great site to RSVP – although you can email/call the vineyard as well.
🚴 You may want to rent a bike to travel between local wineries :)
🛂 If you're tempted to hop into Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, or Italy, make sure visa-wise you're all set!

🍷 Bordeaux

Since there are about 10,000 wine estates around Bordeaux, this might be a tough decision.
Do you care about castles? Taste of wines? Beautiful landscapes? If you're really picky, you may want to work with a wine touring agency to design the most efficient and worthwhile route for you.
Day 1: Enjoy Bordeaux City
1

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte

Vineyard
The story of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Grand Cru Classe, began in the 14th century, when Verrier du Dubosc signed deeds for this estate. At the time, there were vines planted on the estate. George Smith, a Scottish wine merchant, acquired the property in the mid-18th century.
Later, in 1842, Mayor of Bordeaux, Lodi Martin Duffour-Dubergier, acquired the chateau. It has become an exceptional grand cru.
Florence and Daniel Cathiard, former Olympians, fell in love with the estate in 1990. The winery and the estate underwent a major renovation.
Today, at the chateau besides highly regarded red and white wines, you will find a luxury hotel and a spa, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and a wine bar, all surrounded by vineyards, forests, manicured lawns, and open-air art exhibits.

Day 2: Saint Emilion
There are approximately 800 wineries in Saint Emilion, France.  Most wineries are small family-owned estates with vineyards as small as 5 to 15 acres.
5

Château Pavie

Vineyard
Classified Saint Emilion 1st Grand Cru Classe A, Chateau Pavie is one of the top four wineries in Saint-Emilion. A wine tour to Chateau Pavie is one of the rare opportunities to visit one of the most prestigious wineries in Bordeaux and in the world.
6

Château La Gaffelière

Winery
Food & Drink
Wineries & Vineyards
Chateau La Gaffeliere is classified as Saint Emilion 1st Grand Cru Classe B. The estate is one of the top wineries in Saint-Emilion. Besides its excellent wines, in my opinion, the chateau has the most attractive fermentation room in the whole Bordeaux wine region.
7

Château Tour Saint Christophe

Winery
Food & Drink
Wineries & Vineyards
Excellent, diverse wines and a great value for money at this small winery. You get to taste several wines by Group Vignobles K, which owns several wineries on the Right Bank in a tasting room overlooking the hills of Saint-Emilion. The winery experiments with new fermentation method, when grape juice ferments directly in a new oak barrel.
8

Château Beauregard

Vineyard
Sights & Landmarks
This chateau represents the Right Bank appellation of Pomerol, the smallest in Bordeaux, but the most famous one. Chateau Beauregard is a neighbour of the iconic Petrus and Chateau Le Pin producing the most expensive wines of Bordeaux.
9

Château Villemaurine

Vineyard
Food & Drink
I like to suggest this chateau because it offers the unique experience of visiting underground cellars, which used to be limestone quarries for over 800 years.
The chateau offers an immersion into the history of Saint-Emilion. Recommend selecting the “Privilege Tour”, an extended wine tasting experience.  You must taste these excellent examples of Merlot wines grown on limestone soils, made by the team of Chateau Villemaurine, and beautifully served on a terrace with views Saint-Emilion.
10

Château Mangot

Winery
Food & Drink
Innovative winemaking approach meets tradition at this family-owned winery in Saint-Emilion.  The young generation of the Todeschini family has an appealing philosophy of creativity, making wines for people, and a sustainable approach to winemaking. A surprising chance to taste unusual white wine M de Mangot with an overpowering aroma of pears made of Chardonnay, Colombard, and Roussanne. There are also rose wines. In my opinion, the star of the show is the red wine called Todeschini Chateau Mangot.

14

Château Mouton Rothschild

Winery
Food & Drink
The chateau is at the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy.  It is one of the five Bordeaux first growth wineries according to the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.  In 1787, Thomas Jefferson visited the present-day Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and allegedly bought three bottles there. Today, the wines of the chateau are some of the top-ranked wines in the whole of France and one of the most expensive wines in Bordeaux.
During the 2.5 hours visit of the chateau, besides touring the impressive winemaking facilities of the chateau and a tasting, you will be shown Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s collection of wine-themed art pieces, and the original paintings and art objects that have been displayed on the labels of Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
15

Château Hourtin-Ducasse

Vineyard
Food & Drink
Rural charm and authenticity can be found at this family-owned winery. Sample 5 different grape varieties from barrels and follow by the final blend of the five.
Day 3: Langon
16

Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey

Winery
This chateau is an absolute gem of Sauternes, an area where unique legendary sweet wines are made. Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey was classified as the First Growth in 1855, just one level down from the only Superior First Growth Chateau D’Yquem, the legend of Sauternes.
17

Château Pichon Baron

Winery
Food & Drink
Constructed in 1851, this chateaux must be one of the most impressive castles in Bordeaux.  Unfortunately, during the tour, you don’t get to go inside the castle, but just the picture opportunity alone is worth coming or at least stopping by.
However, it’s not just about the castle. The winery is the 2nd Growth under the 1855 classification. Chateau Pichon-Baron vineyards are located on a hill with exceptional soils and unique terroir, ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.
Don’t miss the opportunity to taste the classic expression of Pauillac wines, powerful yet balanced.  If possible, taste the 2009 and the 2010 vintages – I am sure that your personal top favorite wines list will change right there.

Cahors - Explore Malbec Wines

By the 13th century, the city of Cahors could be considered “the London of its day.” It was a center of financial activity, with people flooding into the town from all over Europe. And typically, where there is high-end financial activity there is delicious food and good wine.
In the Middle Ages, the reputation of Malbec wine from Cahors was so strong that it was exported all around the world. Cahors Malbec was served at many Palace dinners and impressed numerous wine aficionados.

Château Haut-Monplaisir

Winery
Tradition Cahors Malbec - 3.7/5
2018 Château Haut-Monplaisir "Tradition" Cahors - 92 pts
Long overlooked, the region has quietly modernized and advanced, and one of the best wineries to emerge in this new wave is Château Haut-Monplaisir. Cathy and Daniel Fournié (and now daughter Mathilde) of Château Haut-Monplaisir farm 75 acres organically in the Lot Valley on what is known as the third terrace of the valley floor, the highest and the best by virtue of its well-drained soils. All of Haut-Monplaisir's wines are composed of 100% Malbec, staying true to the distinctive nature of the grape variety. The "Tradition" is brought up in concrete tanks and 30% neutral barrel preserving its varietal character. This a beautifully ripe and rich Malbec that reflects the "traditions" of the region. Collioure | Grenache noir, gris, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Syrah

Collioure is a picturesque, photogenic village that looks out over a translucent sea, a village proud of its château that once hosted the court of the kings of Majorca. Here the vines also enjoy views of the Mediterranean: overlooking Collioure, the local grape varieties — Grenache noir, gris, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Syrah — are grown in a spectacular terraced amphitheatre, divided into square plots by kilometres of dry stone walls.
Although 70% of the wine made here is red, the Collioure white is just one of the very pleasant surprises produced by the terroir in recent years. This is also a region of artists, inspired by the colours and perspectives. In short, Collioure is an El Dorado for gourmet connoisseurs.

Cassis & Marseille | Explore White Wines of Cassis

Cassis is a Mediterranean fishing port in southern France. Cassis Vineyard was among the very first Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée in 1936 (with Sauternes and Châteauneuf-du-Pape). It is planted – and this is noteworthy – exclusively in the district of Cassis, sheltered by Cap Canaille, the tallest coastal cliff in France, plunging down from a height of 400 metres into the Mediterranean. 12 wine-growers... Because the countryside is agreeable, and the wine-growers know how to initiate wine-lovers into the art of tasting.
One bottle for one vine. A rare wine that is made and sold by twelve wine-growers. Although the whites – dry and fruity – are the most renowned, the reds and rosés are also well-known.
  •  The sea breeze keeps the vines in good health thanks to its healthy humidity
  •  3,000 hours of annual sunshine help the grapes to flourish and increase their sugar content
  •  The rains, in the early spring, allow the vegetation to get off to an early start, and then in the autumn, regenerate the dried-out soil
  • 71% of the production is based on blends of the white grapes of Marsanne and Clairette, with varying accompaniments of Ugni Blanc, Terret Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Bourboulenc.
Prior to arriving, you may want. todo a pit stop in Marseille! Check out my guide on what you can do here for a day!

Clos Sainte-Magdeleine

Winery

Clos Sainte-Magdeleine which affords stunning views of the cliff faces of Cap Canaille is the final destination on your Provençal wine route. Set right on the coast in the Calanques National Park, this estate has been run by the Zafiropulo family since 1920 and produces organically certified and AOC Cassis wines. The family property is open to visitors from April to September. Tour the vineyard and cellars and then finish with a wine tasting.
These are white wines that can age, developing a honeyed, saffron spice in the Clos Sainte Magdeleine 2011 that we tried (something that Sack-Zafiropulo has captured in the younger wines with his cuvée Bel-Arme, that undergoes malolactic fermentation ‘to soften the acidity and show off the gastronomic side of these grapes’).
10

Domaine du Bagnol

Winery
Get back behind the wheel and follow the wine route until you arrive at Domaine du Bagnol (Organic AOC Cassis). As its quite close to the centre, you can also get there on foot from Cap Canaille. A long-standing producer of wine in Cassis and much appreciated by connoisseurs, the estate covers 14.5 hectares of clay-limestone soil. The winery produces about 45,000 bottles of white each year compared to 41,000 bottles of rosé. A one-hour tour from the vineyard to the tasting cellar is available.

Arbois | Jura Yellow Wine & Comté 🧀

Arbois wine is a specialty of Jura, a department in the northeast of France. Vines in Jura benefit from a clay soil called “chailles,” which can be found under a layer of rock that dates back to the Jurassic era.
Arbois wine has an extensive heritage: testimonies from the Celtic era speak of its existence! In the 13th century, aristocrats from Jura and Burgundy popularized it among European royal courts. During the 19th and 20th centuries, wine supplies were deeply hurt due to wars and phylloxera, a pest that destroys grapevines. Nevertheless, people continued to produce Arbois. In 1858, the first society of viticulture of Arbois was established to protect and defend the unique production process. In 1936, Arbois wine was the first product to receive the title “appelation d’origine controlée – AOC.” The wine continues to be produced today.
Over time, wine growers have discovered grapes that are best suited for the Jura area and that give Arbois its particular flavor. Red, rosé, and white wines are made out of white Chardonnay, white Savagnin, Pinot Noir and black Poulsard varieties. The {vin jaune} can only be made out of white Savagnin, and the vin de paille comes from black Chardonnay, black Poulsard, white Savagnin, and black Trousseau varieties.
Proving to be a jack-of-all-trades, the region of Arbois has mastered producing several styles of wine.
Taste the local produce: discover the combinations of local fine foods and wines and taste the cooking of the four Michelin-starred chefs.
Vins Jaunes or Vins de Paille
The vin de paille is a sugary and smooth wine with flavors of candied fruits like prunes and oranges. Typically, it is difficult to produce such a sweet wine in a cold area like Jura. In order to do so, harvested grapes are kept for 6 weeks on straw in a dry and ventilated place. This process results in the grapes fermenting slightly while simultaneously raising the sugar level of the grapes.
Celebrate the vin jaune at the Percée du Vin Jaune festival, one of the largest wine festivals in France, on the first weekend of February.

Château-Chalon Wine Area:
HJura's vins jaunes – of which Château-Chalon is considered the finest example – are unique to the region. They are often compared to Sherry, because the production processes share some of the same features and the wines are somewhat comparable in style. Like sherry, vins jaunes are oxidatively aged for an extended period under a blanket (or voile) of naturally developing yeasts – the equivalent of sherry flor. Château-Chalon wines undergo a minimum of six years' ageing before release, of which at least 60 months must be spent in barrels under the voile that controls the oxidation process.ome to the vin jaune

An eye-opener on a tour of Auxerre’s pedestrian centre is the 15th-century clock tower, which has delicate Gothic ornamentation.
The clock face, crafted in the 1600s, is gilded, and rests on a decorative turreted arch propped up to the side of the main tower.
Take a minute or two to study the clock’s unusual format, measuring solar and lunar movements with two long hands and two dials.
Chablis
The Chablis wine region is divided into different areas. You have the Chablis Grand CruChablis Premier CruChablis and Petit Chablis vineyards. The Chablis Grand Cru is generally the most valuable here. The wine from these vineyards is therefore often the most expensive. Chablis wine is very dry and can be perfectly combined with fish. It is also called oyster water because of the good combination between the wine and the shellfish.

Colmar | Capital of Alsatian Wine ~ Alsace Wine

Colmar truly is an open-air museum. The House of Heads, the Pfister House, an Italian renaissance guards' house, the Old Customs House and the 'Petite Venise' quarter - all are must-sees. But do people know that Colmar is first and foremost a wine capital?
Colmar has seen many battles and wars since it was founded in the ninth century, yet the Old Town has remained surprisingly well-preserved. Whether you’re concentrating on Alsatian wine education (and tasting) or visiting to view the many fountains, stately churches, and Renaissance-era houses, there is plenty to see, do, taste, and learn while in Colmar, France.
And within France, Colmar is situated on the Alsatian Wine Route, or “Route des Vins d’Alsace,” which is the oldest wine trail in France that passes through 67 wine producing communes, towns, and cities.
The seven Alsatian grapes: Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir (the only red), Sylvaner, and Muscat d’Alsace
  • The Sylvaner, light, refreshing, fruity and subtle
  • The Pinot Blanc, soft and delicate, with a touch of freshness
  • The  Riesling, dry, fine, with a subtle bouquet
  • The Muscat d'Alsace, dry, with flavours of fresh grapes
  • The Pinot Gris, powerful and soft, with a complex bouquet
  • The Gewurztraminer, full-bodied, robust, with a great aromatic richness
  • The Pinot Noir, red or rosé, with a fruity taste reminiscent of cherry.
An Alsace and Alsace Great Wine production of dry and aromatic wines, of which 91% are white.
Food to try in Colmar:
  • Foie gras (invented in Strasburg in 1780)
  • Baeckaoffe (a dish composed of three types of marinated meat and potatoes in white wine)
  • Sauerkraut
  • Matelote du Rhin fish dish
  • Le coq au Riesling (chicken in wine)
  • Pain d'épices (similar to ginger bread)
  • Kougelhopf (sweet, bun-like speciality with raisin macerated in kirsch)
  • Munster cheese

Sights & Landmarks
It’s surprising just how well-preserved the architecture and cobblestone streets of Colmar’s Old Town are considering the number of battles and wars it’s seen, including the French Revolution and both World Wars. When you journey into the Old Town, you’ll be able to feel the passage of time as you walk the narrow streets amid quintessential Alsatian half-timbered houses. When the streets finally open onto a large square, the Place de la Cathedrale, you’ll be able to see the Eglise Saint-Martin. This is the largest church in Colmar, dating back to the 13th century.
5

La Petite Venise

Historical landmark
The neighborhood called “Quartier de la Krutenau” goes by another name as well, “La Petite Venise,” or Little Venice. If you’re picturing canals, you’d have the right idea. Colmar’s Little Venice is bisected by the Lauch River canal where travelers take in canal-adjacent restaurants and willow trees as they enjoy a ride down the water. Plenty of foot bridges along the canal provide the perfect views for photo-taking.

Loire Valley | Chinon, Sancerre & Saumur

Chinon
Chinon wine comes from the vineyards around the town of Chinon in Touraine. Unusual for the Loire Valley, it is mostly red wine, with 2-5% rosé and a little white wine. The vineyards consist almost entirely of erosional scree and gravels on top of rather hard Turonian limestones. Toward the Loire itself, the Turonian limestones give way to the Jurassic rock of the Loir.
Grapes:
  •  Cabernet Franc - Cabernet Franc grown on the stony terraces of the area tends to be a young wine with dominant notes of blackcurrant and anise
Soil: There are three major soil types:
  • Alluvial terraces (ancient and recent) along the banks of the Vienne, comprising gravel and sand.
  • Turonian (yellow tuffeau) limestone outcrops where the rivers meet.
  • Plateaus and hillocks largely made up of siliceous clay and sand
Varietals: Reds and rosés are made almost exclusively from Cabernet Franc (Breton), although Cabernet Sauvignon is authorised to no more than 10% of the varietal mix. Whites are made from Chenin.

Petit Brie of Coulommiers | 🧀

Other cheeses native to the Ile de France region include Coulommiers, a large round made with cow’s milk that resembles Camembert but offers a slightly nuttier flavor, and Fontainebleau, a dense, sweet, light cheese made with a combination of cow’s milk and fresh, whipped cream.
Coulommiers’ cheese is a creamy, 45% fat cheese with some farm-made versions made with unpasteurized milk.  When ripe, like the best Bries   Coulommiers is spreadable and has an ivory grey pate and a naturally wrinkled white rind.  The cheese, depending on the milk used, is aged for five to eight weeks before being sold when it will have the light nutty taste of the best brie’s. The cheese is sold in 500 gram (18 oz) wooden boxes,

Normandy & Brittany | Camembert 🧀

Most famous among Norman cheeses is the Camembert de Normandie, a wonderfully versatile yet subtly complex cheese that’s traditionally made with raw cow’s milk, and is most delicious when left to ripen for a while.
Pont l’Eveque and Neufchatel, more cow’s milk cheeses whose mildness will please most palates; and Livarot, made in the town of the same name near Calvados and aged for six months at a time. This is an intense, aromatic cheese with strong notes of hay and wheatgrass: a true gastronomic discovery.
The Tomme du Nevet is particularly distinctive, as some varieties are aged with seaweed for an unusual flavour.

Savoie - The Alpes | Emmental, Reblochon, Beaufort, Abondamce, Chevrotin 🧀

Home to seven protected-label regional cheeses, all made with raw cow’s milk, Savoie is perhaps best known for its mild, nutty Emmental, a favorite among all ages. Its intensely flavorful mountain tommes (pressed and aged cheeses with a semisoft texture) include Tomme de Savoie and Tome de Bauge.
The aged and washed-rind Reblochon is a favorite winter cheese, enjoyed melted over the regional potato tart known as “Tartiflette”, and boasting a deliciously creamy and intense quality.
  • Abondance – soft inside with hints of hazelnut and amber in colour. Comes from abondance cattle in the Abondance Valley.

Dordogne & Perigord | Goat cheese 🧀

In the Dordogne and Perigord region of southwestern France, cheesemaking has a long history stretching back centuries: monks and nuns residing in the many Abbeys that are dotted around the region have made many delicious specialities for centuries. Particularly famous for its excellent goats’ cheeses, the region is a wonderful place to sample local cheeses paired with wines from nearby vineyards in Bergerac (to cite only one example).
Cabecou de Perigord, a delightfully creamy, slightly sharp small round made with local goat’s milk and perfect for accompanying salads and crusty bread.
Périgord is famous for its duck and its truffles, but is less known for its cheeses.

Crop grower
“Making cheese is easy if you love it”, states the Valade family. For several generations now, the family has been breeding herds of goats in the Bergerac region which provide it with the milk required to make goat Tomme, the must-have Périgord Cabécou, fresh cheese and, last but not least, Saint-Agne in different forms and varying degrees of maturity, using traditional techniques.
Visits of the farm from Monday to Saturday from 8am to 12pm and Valadou cheeses (multi-medal winner) are sold on Bergerac markets (Wednesday and Saturday) and Lalinde market (every Thursday).

Abbaye d'Echourgnac

Abbey
Cheese shop
First made by monks in 1852 at the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Bonne Esperance is the delightful Trappe d'Echourgnac cheese. Monks started to buy milk from local farmers and established cheese making facilities at the monastery as soon as they arrived in the area. Today, the l'Abbaye Echourgnac produces its own variety of cheese that is washed with a walnut liqueur (from the neighbouring area of Périgord). Giving the cheese's flavour, a unique mahogany colour and an aubergine coloured rind, it also adds to its smooth and smoky taste.

Aveyron | Goat, Blue & Laguiole cheese 🧀

Home to the world-famous Roquefort, a blue cheese made from sheep’ s milk that’s at once sharp and intensely creamy, crumbly yet perfect for melting over a plate of gnocchi with walnuts, the Aveyron is a wonderfully rustic destination for a food, cheese and wine tour.

Explore the popular farmer’s markets in the region and visit village cheesemakers and agers to taste incomparable local specialties such as the Perail, an adorably small round of sheep’s cheese with a deliciously creamy, melt-in-your mouth aspect; the Laguiole, a raw-cow’s milk cheese which is aged carefully and takes pride of place on regional cheese boards; and the Bleu des Causses, a blue cheese appreciably different from Roquefort in that it’s made from raw cow’s milk rather than sheep’s, and is shaped into a distinctive wheel appearance.
