Recommends from a New Yorker (who’s not because I’m from California) 🤙🏽

General tips 👍🏽

Some things that couldn’t be put on the “Other Things to Do List” because they don’t have set location.
1. 1iota
This is an audience casting company, meaning they put together the audiences for big shows like The Tonight Show, The Daily Show, The View, etc. It’s how I got to see Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Trevor Noah, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Whoopi Goldberg, and more celebrities’ shows/performances (all for free!). It’s lottery based so it’s not guaranteed, but definitely not impossible! The more they fill out of their profiles on the website, the higher their chances of being selected for something. I don’t know when they’re going to NYC, but tell them to apply ASAP because shows book up quickly.
2. Sofar Sounds
Various Locations
These are concerts put on by a nonprofit, Sofar Sound, that brings together local artists to perform music (usually 3-4 acts per show). It’s BYOB (bring your own beer/drinks) and basically a bunch of young people go to a venue (whose location is only announced 24 hours before the show) and bring their drinks, sit on the floor and listen to really good music. Technically this isn’t an NYC-only thing to do, it’s all over the world actually, but the venues that these shows happen in in NYC are pretty cool.
3. Pulsd
This is a website/app that has a lot of discounts for things to do in the city. My friends and I would always use this for when we wanted to go to bottomless brunch (meaning we get a meal + endless drinks for 1.5-2 hours, usually mimosas or bloody mary’s) at a cheaper price. It has other things too, like deals for drinks and some activities.
4. Broadway Shows
Have them apply for the broadway lottery, which enters them into a lottery for cheaper broadway tickets. Their chances are probably better if they apply for daytime, weekday shows. I went to 4/5 of the broadway shows I saw using this lottery so the chances aren’t too bad!
One final note - Manhattan is great, but make sure to explore Brooklyn because it has a looot to offer and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed! I personally prefer it over Manhattan and a lot of New Yorkers would say the same.

Food 🥞🍳🍔

1

Miti Miti

affordable
Mexican restaurant
Bar
Park Slope, Brooklyn
Really good modern Mexican food. Has bomb margaritas!
2

Bogota Latin Bistro

affordable
Latin American restaurant
Park Slope, Brooklyn
Latin food and really good, strong drinks. Owned by the same owner of Miti Miti & right across the street from it.
3

Leo's Bagels

cheap
Bagel shop
Financial District, Manhattan
My favorite bagels I ate while I was in NYC. Get a bacon, egg & cheese on a toasted everything bagel.
4

Artichoke Basille's Pizza

affordable
Pizza restaurant
Restaurant
Several Locations (just google which is closest)
Huuuge pizza slices with really thick crust.
5

Caracas Arepa Bar (summer only)

affordable
Venezuelan restaurant
Williamsburg, Brooklyn | East Village, Manhattan
This is probably my favorite restaurant that I went to in NYC. They have Venezuelan food with, of course, arepas, but also offer other Venezuelan foods as well. The East Village location is really small and not well-suited for large groups, but fine for a couple of people.
6

Sweet Chick

affordable
American restaurant
Williamsburg, Brooklyn | Lower East Side, Manhattan | Queens (several locations)
They’re best known for their chicken & waffles, which is a typical southern American food, but have really good food in general.
7

Smorgasburg

cheap
Food court
Two locations in Brooklyn
A food market that takes place on weekends. On Saturdays it’s in Williamsburg and on Sundays it’s in Prospect Park. The Prospect Park location closes for the season September 1st so the Williamsburg one will be the only option after then. The Williamsburg one has a good view of Manhattan though!

Smorgasburg Prospect Park

Night Life ✨

1

LAVO Nightclub

Permanently closed
very expensive
Night club
Midtown East, Manhattan
A nightclub in  that my friends saw in Sex & the City so we decided to go and it ended up being our go-to club. Tickets are usually $30 and drinks are expensive so drink before! Dress decently, we used to go in heels. They oftentimes have live DJs so check which DJ they’ll have on their website.
2

Union Pool

cheap
Bar
Live music venue
Williamsburg, Brooklyn
This was my friend’s and my favorite bar in NYC. It has a dance floor, indoor bar area, outdoor bar area and even a taco truck! The tacos are delicious and the place is really good for meeting new people.
3

House of Yes

Event venue
Bar
Williamsburg, Brooklyn
This is a pretty bizarre place. They have acrobats swinging on the walls and cabaret performances. It’s pretty popular so make sure to buy tickets before going. I think the music changes depending on the evening, but when my friends and I went they played techno.
4

Gonzalez y Gonzalez

affordable
Restaurant
Night club
Noho, Manhattan
A salsa dancing club that my friends and I really loved going to. The crowd is a bit older and we oftentimes ended up dancing with older dudes, but had fun nonetheless haha.
5

Alligator Lounge

cheap
Bar
Crocodile Lounge
Peter Cooper Village, Manhattan (Now Alligator Lounge?)
This places gives out a free, personal-sized pizza with every drink you buy. The pizza crust is really thin so it’s not super filling, but if you order two drinks and have two pizzas then you have yourself a meal for the night! Good vibes with non-pretentious people.
6

Blind Barber

affordable
Barber shop
East Village, Manhattan
By day it’s a barber, by night a bar. You walk through the barber shop and there is a “secret” door you enter to go into the bar. It’s small and gets pretty cramped. Lower East Side is also a fun area in Manhattan to go out to in general. I can’t remember a specific place we’d go to there, but if they want to check out a few bars in one night this is a good area to go to.

Other Things Need Things to Do ✌🏽

1

Comedy Cellar

expensive
Comedy club
Greenwich Village, Manhattan
My friends used to go here a lot for comedy shows and sometimes they have surprise guests which can be pretty famous, like Aziz Ansari or Hasan Minhaj (at least famous in the US, don’t know if your friends know them haha). Check their website for show times and lineups.
2

The Bell House

affordable
Event venue
**THE MOTH THIS IS JUST ONE LOCATION ON WEBSITE**
Various Locations
This was one of my favorite things that I did in the city. It’s live, impromptu storytelling shows. There is a theme of each night, i.e. “balance” or “cheating,” and people from the audience submit a ballot if they want to go up on stage to share a personal story related to that theme. If they get chosen, they go up on stage, share their story and then get scored on how good their storytelling was by three random audience members. The winner of the night goes on to another “Grand Slam” where they have to compete with other winners for best storytelling. The best stories even go on their podcast.
